Umgeni Hospital Visiting Hours
Umgeni is a long-stay hospital rather than a place people pass through, and it does not publish general visiting times. For most residents this is home, sometimes for many years, so the wards work with families individually and will arrange a visit around the ward's own routine of meals, therapy and outings. Phone 033 330 6146 and speak to the ward sister. The grounds are open and residents move about freely, so staff will ask you to sign in and to meet the person you are visiting in the ward rather than looking for them yourself.

Umgeni Hospital is a 411-bed specialised hospital in Howick, in the uMgungundlovu health district. A specialised hospital caring for people with severe to profound intellectual disability, many with physical and multiple disabilities alongside it. It takes patients of any background from the age of three, from anywhere in KwaZulu-Natal. About 362 residents live across 12 wards of between 26 and 52 people, and there are no secure wards, so residents move freely around the grounds.
