Serves uMgungundlovu, the second most populous district in KwaZulu-Natal with about 1.4 million people. Opened on 1 March 1954 with 620 beds and now has 897, making it the fourth largest hospital in South Africa by bed count. It is fully recognised for post-graduate teaching in all major disciplines and sits 9 km from Pietermaritzburg on a hill overlooking the Msunduzi River.
