Parkinsons disease and medical aid cover

Parkinsons disease is on the Chronic Disease List, so every registered medical scheme in South Africa must cover its diagnosis, medication and ongoing care on every option, at no extra cost to you.

What every scheme must give you

  • Diagnosis and the tests needed to confirm it
  • Medication on the scheme's formulary for this condition
  • Ongoing consultations and monitoring
  • Cover on the cheapest option as well as the most expensive one
The catch is the provider, not the cover. Schemes may require you to use a designated service provider. Use a different doctor or pharmacy and you can face a co-payment even though the condition itself is covered.

Registering the condition

Cover only starts once you register the condition with your scheme. Your doctor completes a chronic application form with the diagnosis code. Until it is approved, your medication comes out of your savings or your own pocket.
